About Toyota Land Cruiser
The very first Land Cruiser appeared back in 1951. It was a rival to Jeep’s units. Ever since the company didn’t change the name of the Land Cruiser. The fact is – this is the longest serving nameplate in the Japanese company.
On the other hand, the LC we got used in modern days is not quite the same as it was 65 years ago. Of course, modernization took its part. But, the purpose of the vehicle has changed. From the utility crossover, it evolved into two directions – one kept its original principles, while the other vehicle went for the more commercial usage. Now, we have two ongoing lines – Toyota Land Cruiser J200 premium crossover and Toyota Land Cruiser J70 off-road SUV.
Short History of Toyota Land Cruiser
After WWII Japan was under the US control. Jeep produced military vehicles. When the Korean conflict started, Toyota had an order to create a similar vehicle. In 1951 the first off-road crossover named Land Cruiser was delivered. That was the first generation called BJ and FJ. Soon, it grew into J20, the second generation of the Toyota Land Cruiser that lasted from 1955 to 1960.
J40 – The Most Durable LC Ever
The third generation, Toyota Land Cruiser J40 is the most famous crossover from this lineup. It lasted for 25 years. Nevertheless, even after its discontinuation in 1984, it lasted until 2001 in some countries. This version raised the popularity of the LC because of its durability and superb off-road performance. Finally, we must thank the J40 for today’s Land Cruiser.
The first Land Cruiser that wasn’t a utility model came in 1967 as J50. Back then, it was obvious that the new unit is starting something new. But, the second generation of comfort models made a strong impact. The Toyota Land Cruiser J60 arrived in 1980, and during the ten-year run, it boosted the popularity of this lineup.
The revolution started with Toyota Land Cruiser J60 made other companies to follow their way. Soon, we had more and more similar models, so the LC had to go to the next generation. The J80 almost closed the gap between the utility and luxury. While the production was at its peak and sales were excellent, Toyota launched the new J100 series. Again, after ten years, we got the current generation – Toyota Land Cruiser J200. It appeared in 2007, and since it will head into the 12th year, we can expect the redesign or possible new generation with 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser.
At the same time, the utility models exist in many countries. After the J40 series that was the true pioneer, this version had only one more generation. Since 1984 we are buying Toyota Land Cruiser J70.
Toyota LC Today
During all these years we saw hundreds of variations of Toyota Land Cruiser. Even nowadays, there are a few different versions, depending on the market. If you see it somewhere as Toyota Land Cruiser V8, that is the J200 series. Also, based on this crossover we can see similarities with Toyota luxury branch’s SUV – Lexus LX570. In many countries, the LC comes with a diesel engine. The emissions standards in the USA are strict and the Land Cruiser is getting power from a gasoline unit.
2019 Toyota Land Cruiser – New Generation, Redesign, Facelift?
We are following rumors and news about the new 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser. At this moment nothing is carved in the stone. We still don’t know what to expect from the upcoming model. After 12 years it will suffer some changes. But, is it going to be enough for a next generation and new series of comfort lineup? That is the question we will try to answer. If the 2019 Land Cruiser only gets a facelift, then we will eagerly wait for 2020 and news about that model.
Toyota Land Cruiser Diesel
As we already mentioned, in some markets Toyota Land Cruiser will add V8 next to its name. It is happening mostly in Europe, where the crossover is using diesel V8 engine. Whatsoever, it has a smaller 2.8-liter unit and the petrol option.
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado
In some parts of the world fans of the LC can see it as a mid-size model called Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. This version grew from the utility J70 series, but it fast went over to the comfort segment. Since 1990 we saw four generation of LC Prado. Now, the ten-year-old crossover is also ready for changes. The next update could launch new generation in Australia, China, and Europe. Rumors about the 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado are also bringing stories about changes under the hood.
2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Hybrid
Here, we will look beyond the next year. That is exactly why the Japanese company is one of the leaders in the automotive industry. They have plans for the upcoming years. In that schedule, the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser takes the important spot. It could be the first premium model to come with a hybrid engine. According to rumors, it is not likely to happen for the 2019 year model, and the year after that is the great chance for launching such a drivetrain.
Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX570
The closest sibling to the 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser is the Lexus LX570. This premium SUV is not so capable of off-roading as LC. However, similarities between these two are obvious. On the other hand, the big crossover still doesn’t have a hybrid drivetrain, while the most of Lexus SUV lineup has it. So, these twins could soon get one.
Future of the Toyota Land Cruiser
The Toyota Land Cruiser is indestructible! After 67 years we can say that. The SUV has it all. If you need a reliable and durable vehicle, LC is among the best ones. Luxury appearance and comfortable interior – it is there again. Off-road adventures, long trips, or city cruising, the Land Cruiser will do it all.
There is a lot more we can say positive about the Toyota LC. However, we will investigate updates, news, and rumors about the upcoming models and share it here with all fans that support our work and effort.
