Shortly after the discontinuation, Toyota is considering to bring back the FJ Cruiser. The last edition of this vehicle rolled out a factory in 2018. Now, after some updates, the old-school off-road SUV could come back as 2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Initially, this vehicle was more similar to Land Cruiser Prado, than to the classic Land Cruiser. It was more affordable and buyers liked it in the beginning. But, with the world economic crisis, the sales start to drop, and FJ Cruiser never recovered.

The main characteristics of the SUV are an eye-catching design and excellent off-road and handling skills. Downsides were minor and for most buyers acceptable. For example, users don’t like the layout of the interior and lack of space for passengers in the back seat. Also, the FJ Cruiser never had as much equipment as Toyota Land Cruiser. But, it was cheaper, though. After the return, the 2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser will face no competition, since Hummer is not coming back any time soon.

Discontinuation and Return

As we said, the FJ Cruiser had a great start of its life. Like in a fairytale, everything went so smooth. After the premiere of the concept in 2003, the first production model came out in 2005. In its first two years, this SUV achieves the best sales results. But then, the crisis hit the automotive industry. The FJ Cruiser managed to survive, but it lost the initial swing. The SUV ended its career in the US in 2014. In its homeland we can still see it in salons, but not for a too long. The 2018 FJ Cruiser is the last edition. For now.

The 2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser will make some radical changes to revive the vehicle. Well, the platform is the same, but the idea is completely different. More aluminum in its body and economical engines could breathe a new life into this vehicle. It will remain eye-catching and appealing. The interior expects modernization. New features, genuine materials, and futuristic layouts are part of the comeback plan. So, fans of the Toyota FJ Cruiser, don’t worry, since the vehicle is about to return in a no time.

Can 2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser Be a Hybrid?

This is one of the reasons why Toyota is choosing the comeback. As a leader in the hybrid segment, they have good platforms and the base for development. On the other hand, having a tough look and green vehicle at the same time could warm up the US customers.

A huge V-6 engine was powerful, but it consumed too much fuel. For the 2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser, the company is also considering to pair V-6 and an electric motor. However, it is not going to be a 4.0-liter displacement. For example, Highlander is the only mid-size three-row hybrid in the market. The 2020 FJ Cruiser could borrow that one and tune it to deliver more power. Of course, special suspension, shocks, and brakes will make the SUV ideal for an off-road drive, even if its power and torque are not very high.

2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser Diesel

Toyota is about to launch Tacoma and Tundra trucks with diesel engines. This drew a lot of interest from buyers in the US. Can they do the same with 2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser? Of course. With scandals surrounding German carmakers, the Japanese companies could take advantage with their drivetrains. This could be the perfect moment for Toyota although the sales of diesel are dropping. That is the current situation and buyers are not going to leave all the advantages of these powertrains because of some fake reports from German carmakers Audi and VW.

According to rumors, Toyota Tacoma could use a D4D engine with direct injection and common rail system. Such drivetrain can produce nearly the same amount of power as a petrol unit, but it is more durable and its output is way over the gasoline mill.

2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser Redesign

The redesign of the 2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser is also part of the plan for a comeback. But here, the SUV is not changing the exterior so radical. Boxy look is the trademark of this lineup and it will remain for the next edition. On the other hand, details matter. Do not expect to see many familiar parts on the body of FJ Cruiser when it comes back. Bumper, headlights, grille up front, taillights, rear gates, exhaust tips on the back will be new.

The new look of the interior is another task for designers. Since many buyers complained to its layout, we assume the 2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser will offer more space. Also, the complete overhaul will affect the look of all parts – dashboard, knobs and buttons, infotainment, upholstery, gauges. Futuristic layouts will make the all-new Toyota FJ Cruiser fresh and appealing.

2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser Price

This is something totally unpredictable. The cost of the 2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser will depend on many factors. First of all, we still don’t know if it is definitely a hybrid. Petrol or diesel variant is definitely cheaper options. Also, the company could add the PRD Pro package, or some of its elements to draw the attention to the new model. Finally, the interior will have new functions and these could significantly change the price.

When is Toyota FJ Cruiser Coming Back?

We hope to see it as soon as possible. But, no schedule is set yet. The company needs to react fast before the memory of the FJ totally fades. Japanese fans are disappointed. Enthusiasts in the US are eagerly waiting for comeback news for four years. Now, they might not be happy to hear that their favorite vehicle is going to be a hybrid. But, it is a good start and we won’t write off the conventional off-road SUV.

  1. I still own my 2007 FJ. One of the best cars I have ever owned, which includes Mercedes nd Porsches. I am amazed how well the paint has held…still looks like new.

  2. Love our 2012 FJ. Dials on top of dash and clock need a different color to make them readable in the daytime.
Look forward to seeing the new ones!

  3. I never understood why Toyota didn’t just address the bad visibility problem with the rear side panels. But no, instead of fixing it, they just discontinue it altogether.

  4. I am so in love with my 2007 FJ but it’s getting time for something new. But nothing out there even compares! Please bring it back! Keep it affordable like the old ones, and keep the look similar (I don’t like the orange Kia soul looking one pictured above). Then I can trade in the old for a new and not cry.

  5. I got divorced and couldn’t afford my payments on my FJ. So I gave it to my daughter. She still drives it. Now I want another one for me. I am afraid that I won’t like the NEW body style. I was so in love with mine. Was a solid green color. Very sharp looking. Hope it doesn’t change too much.

  6. My 2014 FJ, and before that a 2004, are the finest automobiles I have ever owned. It is reliable, 20-22 mpg is not bad, quiet, no rattles, runs like a fine Swiss watch . . . errr: Japanese, almost expect it never to wear out. Can’t wait for the new version which my wife will get.
